- What does quiet time look like?
Here’s what you can do:
- Pick a time each day or week for quiet time. Decide where everyone will be and how long it will last. Keep your child nearby so he or she feels safe, even if he or she can’t see you.
- Explain the plan to your child or family members. Talk about what quiet time means and what they can do. Use simple words so they understand.
- Make a basket of quiet toys or let them choose two toys to bring to their room. Kids might choose to play with a stuffed animal or use their imagination.
- Use a timer they can see, such as a kitchen timer or clock. This helps them understand how long quiet time lasts.
- Start small. Begin with 10 minutes and slowly add more time each day. You can add three minutes each time until you reach your goal.
- Give a reward. After quiet time, offer a small treat, like a snack or a trip to the park.
- What are some good toys for quiet time?
Here are some easy, no-mess toys your child can use on his or her own:
- Books to read
- Magnetic tiles, wooden blocks or plastic construction bricks.
- Coloring books or drawing paper
- Puzzles
- Audiobooks
Tip: Try not to let kids use screens, like tablets or phones, during this time. Quiet time is a great chance to take a break from technology.
