Preventive Care: Your Path to Good Health

April 9, 2025

There are things you and your primary care provider (PCP) can do to help keep you from getting sick. These things can also help catch health problems early. That’s when they are easier to treat. We call this preventive care.

Here are ways you can be careful with your health:

Get regular checkups: These are visits with your PCP that focus on preventive care rather than treating illness or injury. They include physical exams, screening tests and vaccinations. Healthy Blue covers one wellness exam each year for adults and children.

Have screening tests: These tests help detect diseases early. Common screenings include those for cancer (like breast, cervical and colorectal cancers), high blood pressure, cholesterol levels and diabetes. Healthy Blue covers many health screenings — plus you can earn Healthy Rewards for getting them.

Get vaccinated: Vaccines protect against infectious diseases like the flu, COVID-19 and measles. Staying up to date on your “shots” can help keep you from getting sick. It also keeps certain illnesses from spreading to protect those around you.

Know your family health history: This helps you and your PCP identify risks you may have for certain conditions. And that can help you and your PCP decide which preventive steps are best for you.

Choose a healthy lifestyle: Healthy choices can lower your risk of chronic conditions. Eat a balanced diet. Exercise often. Don’t use tobacco products. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink. Healthy Blue can help you. We offer care management programs for recovery support for alcohol and substance use disorders. We also offer a tobacco cessation program.

Learn as much as you can: The right information and counseling can help you make good health decisions and take steps to improve your health. Check out Healthy Blue’s care management programs to learn more.

Check out our Healthy Rewards program. You can earn gift cards when you get certain preventive care. This includes flu shots, well visits for children and adults, and preventive screenings. To learn more, please call us at 866-781-5094 (TTY: 866-773-9634) Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The right preventive care for you will depend on your age, sex and health risks. Ask your PCP what’s right for you. Then stay on top of what you need — and when you need it.

If your primary language is not English, language services are available to you free of charge.  Call Customer Service at 866-781-5094 (TTY: 866-773-9634) Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
